The story takes place in the seventh century and gives a fictional report from the creation of the Book of Kells. Abt Cellach, obsessed with building a strong wall to keep marauding Vikings from the destruction of the early Christian monastery of Kells, expects his young nephew Brandaen to follow in his footsteps. Brendan, the leather in the scriptorium of the monastery and heard the story of Aidan of Iona, a master illuminator who works at the Book of Iona. Aidan came later to the monastery, accompanied by his cat Pangur Ban. Brother Aidan's escape from the Vikings who destroyed his own monastery, and the unfinished book by Iona with him. Taking under his guard Brendan, Aidan asked Brendan to car in the woods in search of nuts to gall ink, but the boy was scared when he was banned from the forest to go through his uncle. Brendan eventually come to the forest where he meets a bosgeest named Aisling. She is suspicious of Brendan at first, but soon become friends with him to help him find the gall nuts. Although Cellach learning of his adventure and banned him from leaving the boundaries of the abbey, Brendan sneak mock him as Aidan learning lighting, while Aisling brings him to a wider world.

Eventually, Brendan Aidan learns that she needs help to finish Paper Iona because of its hands and failing eyes, and the loss of the eye-collums Cill, a special lens that he has. Aidan seems that his predecessor obtain Cruach of Croom, a Celtic pagan deity, with whom Brendan has a terrifying encounter in advance. When Brendan tried to sneak from the abbey to cave Croom to the other eye to gain, he is caught and locked up in his room by Cellach, who later gets into a disagreement with Aidan and claim that he left when spring comes.

After hearing the dispute, Pangur Ban ventures into the forest to Aisling's help. Aisling free Brendan, using her magic to Ban Pangur to sit in a spirit that the key collection to his room, and together they flee into the forest. When Brendan told Aisling his plan, they begged him not to go through with showing that Croom Cruach her people and her mother murdered and will probably kill him too. Brendan told her that he is in the eye to pick the book completed. Aisling eventually agrees to help him and manages to get Brendan in the cave, but seems to be consumed by the darkness Croom's in the process. After some struggle, Brendan Croom defeat by taking the remaining eye of the god and imprisoned him in a circle of chalk, which the blind Croom consumption itself. With the eye in his possession, Aisling he left the cave to the mantle which he gave to find neatly folded under the cracked rock they lifted him in effect. Leading away from the place a trail of flowers left by Aisling as a sign that they survived. Brendan returns to the abbey and to help keep Aidan in secret.
